The delicious food at Hefner Grill in OKC is topped only by the gorgeous views of Lake Hefner. You’ll keep going back for more.
One of the biggest perks of my job is meeting so many wonderful people. The challenge, however, is that I only see most donors on gameday, so I don’t get to know them personally. And on gameday, I am super busy and they are watching the game. I decided to change that this year, by doing in-person stewardship visits with our club seat holders. I escape the office for a few hours, and the visit is all about engagement and stewardship. Overall, the feedback has been very positive. But even when I received criticism, I used it as an opportunity to get better. Sometimes the visit is a quick business-like meeting, and other times I feel like we’re best friends by the time I leave.
Last week I had a lunch appointment at Hefner Grill, which is on Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City. I don’t get out to the lake that often, and I don’t know why. It’s such a great area, with a running path all the way around the lake, water activities, picnic areas, and several restaurants. The best part of the restaurants on Lake Hefner is the view
Hefner Grill sits right on the lake (as do the other restaurants), and so has stunning views.
As you enter Hefner Grill, there is a large waiting area and hostess stand that opens up into the main restaurant. There is a large bar area to the right, with ample seating. There is also a piano in the bar area, and they have live music Wednesday – Saturday evenings. I am confident that during beautiful weather Hefner Grill is a major hot spot, especially during happy hour and into the early evening. The dining room is very spacious as well, and is a combination of booths and tables. Our table was close to the window, so we still had the view through the windows.
One of the most unique aspects of the restaurant is the ceiling
Yes, those are coffee bean bags! I’ve never seen anything like it, and love the unique use of the bags. Honestly I’m not even sure what made me look, because I really don’t ever check out the ceiling in a restaurant. I just happened to look up at one point and it caught my eye.
Hefner Grill is open for lunch and dinner, and they also offer a Sunday brunch menu. I don’t do well with large menus, so I was happy to see that the menu is a good size, but not overwhelming. The lunch menu includes appetizers, sandwiches, soups & salads, and main plates. We decided to skip appetizers and go straight for the entrees.
As usual, I went back and forth on a couple of items. With the help of our server, I decided on the grilled bone in pork chop
The pork chop was amazing. The mustard and herb crust adds a wonderful texture contrast to the tender and juicy pork chop. Capers have a very briny flavor, but the rest of the sauce toned it down significantly. I love the tender-crisp vegetables, and the very colorful variety in the mix. The creamy mashed potatoes have chunks of potatoes mixed in, which is a great way to bring different textures together.
I finally looked at my watch when we asked for the check, and it was 3PM! I knew we talked for a long time, but I had absolutely no idea it was 2 1/2 hours. We covered OSU football and basketball, OSU history, and solved a few of the world’s problems as well.
There is no question I will be back to Hefner Grill. I want to experience happy hour on the patio on a beautiful afternoon, and also try some of the other menu items.
