One of the best parts of working in athletics is the relationships I’ve developed over the years. Through the Association of Luxury Suite Directors I’ve made wonderful connections with many of my peers. More importantly, several have become really great friends. I met my friend Peg through the ALSD, and through her job at the University of Nebraska. My friend Dave was also filling in as interim Athletic Director. So last month, when OSU had a bye week and Nebraska had a home game, it was the perfect opportunity for a trip North for a visit.

No road trip is complete without restaurant visits for the blog. Let’s be honest, I plan my trips around where I’m going to eat. Wichita is the first sizable city north of Stillwater, so I usually stop there on my way back from Kansas City. I decided to switch it up on this trip, and stop for breakfast on my way out of town. My search took me to HomeGrown Wichita.

Jon & Lauren Rolph opened HomeGrown earlier this spring. The restaurant is in a strip mall about 5 miles off I-35, and is a daytime eatery; HomeGrown is open 6:30am – 2:30pm daily. HomeGrown is an open and spacious restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, a host stand at the entrance, a bar with a bar seating area to the left, the main dining room behind the host stand, and a large open kitchen at the far end of the building.

I had read that the wait during breakfast is usually long on weekends; but I visited on Thursday and sat almost immediately. I sat in the main dining room, at a table near the kitchen. In hindsight, I would have preferred to sit in the bar area, as it has a more unique look. Oh well, lesson learned.

HomeGrown features locally sourced products, and currently works with 13 local businesses. I don’t do well with large menus; the HomeGrown menu isn’t huge, but it’s big enough. I began with coffee while I decided.

I love the mini creamer pot! What a fun touch. I also appreciate that you get a coffee carafe and water jug at the table. That eliminates waiting for the server, or chasing someone down for a refill.

The HomeGrown breakfast menu includes appetizers, pancakes, French toast, fresh starts, breakfast your way, omelets & scrambles, friends with benedicts, and a kid’s menu. You can also order sides of meats and breads. Drinks include juice, coffee, tea, plus breakfast cocktails. The adult beverages are available beginning at 9AM.

I’ve never seen appetizers on a breakfast menu before. But when one of those appetizers is homemade Pop-Tarts you don’t question it…you order one. HomeGrown offers a traditional brown sugar Pop-Tart everyday, plus one daily special. The special of the day didn’t wow me, so I went traditional

My goodness this Pop-Tart is wonderful. It’s a little sweet, but not nearly as much as store-bought Pop-Tarts. The Pop-Tart is very light and flaky, warm, with just a thin layer of filling in the middle. The sprinkles on top are the perfect finish. As the HomeGrown proclaims, “sprinkles are for winners”.

Of course I had a hard time deciding on an entree. I don’t normally do benedicts, but I couldn’t resist the homemade Hollandaise sauce so I did the Benedict Florentine.

Sautéed spinach, mushrooms, onion, poached eggs•, fresh hollandaise with a bacon crumble on a toasted English muffin

Hollandaise sauce is usually quite heavy, but this one was just the opposite. Creamy, yet light, and very flavorful. The egg was poached perfectly, and the spinach and mushrooms brought everything together. And how can I forget the bacon?! I love that they use chunks of fresh cooked bacon, and use a very generous serving.

Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. My server came over within just about a minute after I sat down, but I felt like she rushed me. I immediately asked for the Pop-Tart, but wanted more time to select an entree. She came over about 5 times in 5 minutes, and then my entree arrived before I even finished the Pop-Tart. I would have liked just a little more time to relax. I did notice that other tables around me ordered very quickly, so maybe that is the norm.

Service aside, I really enjoyed my visit to HomeGrown. The food was delicious, and I absolutely loved the Pop-Tart. I got really full, because I don’t normally start with an appetizer. But here, it’s worth it. I will definitely be back.
