When I began the blog in 2012, I focused primarily on main course and side dishes, and I didn’t start adding appetizers until a couple of years ago. Which is funny, because I love to entertain. And what better way to entertain guests than with appetizers?

My favorite appetizers are those that are simple to make, easy to eat, and great to feed a crowd. Spinach and Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms are the most popular with my friends. And Marinated Steak Vegetable Roll Ups are elegant enough for entertaining, and simple enough for a game day tailgate.

Pigs in a Blanket has been one of my favorite snacks for as long as I can remember. They were a regular rotation when I was in my 20’s, and seemed to be on everyone’s party spread.

I love the idea of making kicked-up versions of fun recipes like I did with Crunchy Baked Fish Sticks. So this was the perfect opportunity to create Pigs in an Everything Blanket

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS
  • They’re easy to make and ready in about 25 minutes
  • The Everything Seasoning adds a wonderful punch of flavor
  • They’re a perfect bite-sized food, and great for a crowd

How can you NOT want to dive right into the whole batch of these Pigs in an Everything Blanket?! They’re perfect 2-3 bite treats, and so delicious with just a few ingredients.

INGREDIENT TIPS FOR PIGS IN AN EVERYTHING BLANKET

I use hot dogs and prefer the bold flavor of Angus beef over regular hot dogs. And since I rarely buy them, I’m kicking it up a notch when I do.

One crescent dough sheet is just the right size to make a whole batch.

Use a Pizza Cutter to cut the dough into strips. It cuts more smoothly than a knife and doesn’t stick to the dough.

Everything seasoning is what takes Pigs in an Everything Blanket to new levels. Yes, you can buy the seasoning mix in a jar, but why do that when it has just 6 ingredients and comes together in seconds?

THE DIPPING SAUCE COULDN’T BE EASIER

I use Whole Grain Mustard, but it does have a strong bite from the mustard seeds. So I also add Spicy Brown Mustard.

Raw Honey adds a creamy consistency, and tones down the bite of the mustard combination.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Unroll crescent dough sheet, and lay horizontally on a flat surface. You may need to roll it very lightly with a rolling pin to flatten any bulges in the dough.

Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into about 1/2″ strips. You should get 12 strips from one sheet.

process shot: overhead shot of crescent dough sheet cut into strips

Cut each strip in half, for 24 total strips. Stretch each strip slightly to extend by about 50%.

Next, cut hot dogs into thirds, for 24 total pieces.

Place a hot dog piece at the bottom of each strip of dough, and roll up the hot dog pieces. You want the dough to roll several full times around each hot dog.

Place each roll on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, with the open end facing down.

In a small bowl, combine the Poppy Seeds, Toasted Sesame Seeds, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper for the everything seasoning mix.

Brush each roll with a little bit of melted butter, and sprinkle with seasoning mix.

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 15 minutes, until the dough is golden brown.

SERVING OPTIONS

I like to serve Pigs in an Everything Blanket immediately. They will be scorching hot, but I can’t help myself. The mustard dipping sauce does help to cool them down slightly.

These are fabulous to serve at a party or a gameday tailgate. As part of an appetizer spread, I plan on 3 per person. But honestly, I can easily eat 6+ as a snack if I’m hungry.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use another type of hot dog? Absolutely! Try it with turkey dogs, Lil’ Smokies, Vienna Sausage, or smoked sausage.

Can I make these ahead? You can prep them a couple of hours ahead and store them in the fridge, but I don’t recommend baking them until right before serving.

What about leftovers? I don’t recommend reheating Pigs in an Everything Blanket, as the dough will get soggy. Besides, they’ll be so popular that you won’t have any leftovers to worry about

Pigs in an Everything Blanket

Yield: 24 pieces
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Pigs In An Everything Blanket are a fabulous kicked-up take on the classic appetizer. Dipped in the simple honey mustard sauce, they are perfect for gameday tailgates, entertaining, or a snack

Ingredients

  • 8 hot dogs (I use all-beef Angus)
  • 1 package Crescent dough sheets
  • 2 Tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 Tablespoons whole grain mustard
  • 1/2 Tablespoon spicy brown mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon raw honey

EVERYTHING SEASONING

  • 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  2. Sprinkle flat surface with a little bit of flour, and lay crescent dough sheet flat on top of flour. If there are any holes in the sheet, pinch them closed. You may also want to roll the sheet out very slightly, to even it out.
  3. Cut each hot dog into 3 equal pieces. So when you are done, you will have 24 total hot dog pieces.
  4. Make sure the sheet is laying horizontally. Using a pizza cutter, cut crescent dough sheet into strips about 1/2" wide, and then cut into half. You should get about 25 strips per sheet.
  5. Place a hot dog piece at the end of a sheet strip, and roll up the hot dog pieces. You may want to stretch out the strips slightly, so you roll the hot dogs several times over. Lay each roll on the parchment paper, with the end laying flat on the paper. That ensures the dough will not separate while it bakes
  6. Combine all seasoning mix in small bowl. Brush the top of each roll with a little bit of melted butter, and sprinkle with seasoning mix
  7. Mix whole grain and spicy brown mustard together. Add honey, and stir briskly, to thin the mixture.
  8. Bake for about 15 minutes, until dough is golden brown. Serve immediately with dipping sauce

Notes

Use a Pizza Cutter to cut the crescent dough sheet into strips. It cuts more smoothly than a knife and doesn’t stick to the dough.

Yes, you can buy Everything Seasoning, but why do that when it has just 6 ingredients and comes together in seconds? Besides, this way you only make what you need.

I seriously didn't think you could make pigs in a blanket any better, but adding seeds on top to make them EVERYTHING pigs in a blanket? Mind blown! My 2 year old loves pigs in a blanket and everything bagels, so I'm pretty sure this is his ultimate snack food.

I LOVE pigs in a blanket! I actually forgot about them until I saw this recipe and told my husband (who is from Italy and has never had them) about how we should try them. He wasn't impressed, haha. But this recipe looks delicious and is perfect for game day.
