Homemade cheesecakes and cakes, local ice cream and coffee. That’s what you’ll find at Cheesecakes by Alex in Greensboro NC. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Last month I went to North Carolina to visit Kara and do a Greensboro food tour. Kara and I have been friends since college. She is a huge proponent of my blog, and we’ve been discussing this tour for a couple of years. Our schedules finally worked out this summer while I was in Maryland visiting family. Kara sent me lots of restaurant options, but I just put her charge.
Kara’s goal was to hit as many restaurants as possible in 48 hours. We only had lunch on Monday, but made up for it on Tuesday with breakfast and dinner in Greensboro, plus appetizers and lunch in Charlotte. Kara’s friend Angela joined us for dinner Tuesday night at Crafted: The Art of Street Food. We were full, but Kara really wanted me to experience Cheesecakes by Alex.
Why is this post #249A? Well, dessert-only shops don’t count as a brand new post. No real reason, I just started that with my second post on the blog, and it stuck.
Cheesecakes by Alex is in the heart of downtown Greensboro. The area reminds me of an old-town Main street. Cheesecakes by Alex began in 2002 in Alex’s home, as he baked for friends and family. That same year he opened the brick-and-mortar shop to sell to the public. The original space was a tiny store on the corner. But they soon outgrew it, and took over the space next door as well.
The main entrance to Cheesecakes by Alex is in the expanded space. There are a few tables on the right as you enter, and the dessert and order counter is to the left. Just beyond the order counter is a doorway into the original Cheesecakes by Alex space. It’s such a tiny space, with the bakery on the right behind enclosed glass so you can watch them work, and a couple of high-boy tables. The bakery was originally both the bakery and order counter. There is also a pergola-covered outdoor patio.
All of the cheesecakes, cakes and baked goods at Cheesecakes by Alex are homemade; ice cream is from Homeland Creamery; and coffee and espresso are from local roasters. There are 22 flavors of cheesecake; 20 are available year-round, and 2 are seasonal. Cheesecakes and cakes can be pre-ordered, picked up on site, or even shipped. Cheesecakes by Alex also offers cheesecakes and cakes by the slice, cupcakes, muffins, turnovers, brownies, and cookies.
I tried to be strong and not get anything. But that totally goes against the premise of the food blog. And besides, how could I turn down homemade cheesecake from a locally owned shop? I finally decided on the Kahlua espresso, to share between the 3 of us
Wow. I am so glad I gave in and got the cheesecake. It is amazing. The crust is chocolate, a wonderful surprise I didn’t expect. The cheesecake itself is very creamy, and it’s rich but not heavy. After one bite I knew I could eat a whole slice, no matter how full I was. Besides, dessert just fills in the space in your stomach, right?!
This cheesecake was the perfect way to end a day full of food and fun.
Will I go back to Cheesecakes by Alex? Of course I will, there are 21 more cheesecake flavors to try! I’m just glad I don’t live closer, or I would be there way too often.
