The Miller Grill, Yukon OK

Yukon is the Czech capital of Oklahoma. Who knew?! What I do know is that you must check out The Miller Grill, voted best restaurant in town.

I only eat red meat occasionally, until I’m getting ready to donate platelets. Don’t get me wrong, I love red meat and could it eat regularly. I’m just trying to not eat a ton of it. Long story short, I have sickle cell, so my iron is lower than normal and I have to binge eat red meat, green leafy vegetables, and other things high in iron so I can donate. I hate needles, but giving blood is good for you and platelets are always in high demand because they only last 5 days. If the blood people had their way I would be there weekly.  No chance on that one, mainly because I’d have to live on iron pills and I don’t want to do that. Oh and the needle is in your arm for about 2 hours. So I donate every 2-3 months.

Last week I had a lunch appointment with a club seat holder who lives near Yukon, OK, and this just happened to be in the midst of a red meat binge. I had never been to Yukon, which is about 15 miles west of OKC. Yukon is a cute little town, about half the size of Stillwater.  That means I could never live there, even though it’s closer to OKC. I decided after I moved here that I would never go smaller…and I’m sticking to that. By far the largest thing in Yukon is the flour factory, and I’m quite sure it is used as the landmark for everything else in town.

Craig and I went back and forth on options, and finally decided on The Miller Grill. Craig had never been there, but it wasn’t far from his office and he had heard good things about it.  Miller Grill is behind the factory in the middle of a strip mall. The first thing I noticed was the very distinctive window decor

As I walked inside, my first thought was “this place should be on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives“. I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of Guy Fieri, but I do love the restaurants he discovers. I’ve only been to one of the restaurants from the show, and it is a must-stop every time I drive to Kansas City.  Miller Grill is a long narrow building with seating for about 50. There is a small host stand at the front, and the cash register and open kitchen are at the back with bar seating that looks into the kitchen.

The Miller Grill menu has quite a bit of variety, and the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and early dinner. Neither of us normally do appetizers, but then I saw the onion ring tower…I can’t pass up one of those

These onion rings were so delicious.  And massive.  I bet each tower is a whole large onion. The breading was light and extra crispy, and the onions were perfectly cooked. We each had 2 and that was more than enough.

As we ate the onion rings, we perused the rest of the menu. Craig went with the Miller BLT, but took off the avocados. Of course I gave him grief for that, because avocadoes go with everything! He did his egg over hard so it wouldn’t be runny at all

Before we began eating Craig mentioned that he wasn’t really hungry. However, he did clean his plate, and raved about the sandwich.

I don’t do well with large menus, and this one was no different. I went back and forth on numerous items, and ended in the burger section since I needed the red meat. The Kitchen Sink caught my eye, but I definitely did not need 2 burger patties. I asked for just one patty, added avocado to my burger, and did my egg between easy and medium. Burgers are served with your choice of one side. I briefly considered fried okra, but when I saw that the fries are hand-cut, I knew I had to go with them instead

Wow, this was outstanding.  Miller Grill uses 100% Oklahoma beef in their burgers, and the quality shows. The beef is so flavorful, the bacon was nice and thick, and the egg was cooked perfectly; a little runny but not ridiculous. Even without the onion rings, no chance I could have eaten 2 patties. The fries were scorching hot. Crisp on the outside, nice and fluffy on the inside.  Exactly how they should be.

When we arrived it was the heart of the lunch rush so the place was packed. But by the time we were done we were almost the only ones left. Eventually Craig headed back to work, and I stayed behind to take a few notes and pictures. Yukon High School is the predominant decor, along with photos of different landmarks around town.

As I was taking pictures, a guy asked if I was getting what I needed, and I said yes. He said that he has had random journalists coming in to take “official” pictures for publications, without permission or authority.  I apologized, and told him about my blog. As it turns out, he’s Jason, the owner of the restaurant. We talked for a while, and he’s a wonderful guy, very friendly and engaging. I told him about my initial Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives thought. Lo and behold, they’re working on that very thing! They were also featured on Discover Oklahoma recently (episode #1018).

Jason asked what I had to eat, and when I told him he said “that’s not even our best stuff”. Well, if what I had wasn’t even their best, I can’t wait to go back! One of their signature items is the Indian Taco

I had seen that on the front window and on the menu. Honestly, I was a little hesitant to order a taco at a burger place. But clearly I shouldn’t judge. Jason said I should come back and try other dishes, and I can guarantee you that WILL happen.

Miller Grill is also part of the Keep It Local OK program. You buy a card for $10 per year, and there are hundreds of restaurants, shops and services in the OKC metro, Norman and Tulsa that participate.  Nothing in Stillwater yet, but I hope that changes soon.  Most of the restaurants are 10% off the bill, but the larger benefit is supporting local businesses.

Will I go back to Miller Grill? No question.  Even though I don’t have any reason whatsoever to go to Yukon any time in the near future, this place alone is worth a special trip. Our server was great, I really enjoyed spending a little time with the owner, and the food was outstanding.
